What happened

Adelaide won the season opener at Melbourne 97-95. They made 13 threes to Melbourne's 7, an 18-point edge from deep. Bryce Cotton scored 29. Cole Anthony scored 30 in under 22 minutes, the fewest minutes for a 30-point game in records back to 2015-16. That story is on hold until his reported minutes limit is confirmed. Fan claims of a Melbourne home whistle aren't backed by fourth-quarter free throws.

Suggested follow-ups

Rarity Winning despite a 30-point bench deficit has happened 18 times since 2015-16

Using the same valid-game filter, how many of the 18 wins by the weaker-bench side came by 2 points or fewer?

Adelaide won by 2. This tells us whether narrow escapes are the usual pattern when a team overcomes a large bench gap.

Context Winning despite a 30-point bench deficit has happened 18 times since 2015-16

How many times since 2015-16 has Adelaide been out-scored off the bench by 30 or more, and what was its win-loss record in those games?

It frames the Round 1 result against Adelaide's own history for an Adelaide-focused broadcast angle.

Rarity Anthony's 30 points came in 21:50, fewest minutes for 30 on record (since at least 2015-16)

Since 2015-16, how many 30-point games came in under 25 minutes played?

This shows how thin the company is beyond the single runner-up, Lual-Acuil's 23:02.

Editor's notes

Melbourne United v Adelaide 36ers, NBL27 Round 1: editorial summary (run 5)

The run used about US$1.29 of the US$5.00 budget and finished well inside the 1,500-second limit. It produced 10 findings, which hits the 6–10 post-game target. There are three cross-source chains, linked by parent_id. There were no active directives, so no finding has a `prompted_by` and every finding is technically unprompted. All of them came straight from the run brief.

What happened. Adelaide won 97–95 away. Melbourne cut the lead to two with Anthony's three at 0:56, then missed its last four shots. Adelaide made 13 of 30 threes and Melbourne 7 of 23. That was an 18-point edge from three in a two-point game (#30, linked to the commentary finish in #23). Melbourne actually scored more from two-pointers.

Against the pre-game brief:

In-game pulse (#26). Fan chat peaked between 11:16 and 11:17 UTC. There were at least 12 messages abusing the referees in about 80 seconds, shortly after an Adelaide big man fouled out at 11:15. A large share of the chat all game was about betting on quarter scores and match totals, including messages that tied referee complaints to bets. That is relevant to partners and to integrity.

Fan claim tested (#28 → #29), challenge it. A chat message posted twice said Melbourne got "a 10-point gift from the refs in the 4th quarter". In the fourth quarter Melbourne scored 4 free-throw points from 6 attempts, and Adelaide scored 5 from 5. Over the whole game Adelaide had more free throws, 24 to 19. The data can't judge whether individual calls were right.

Holds before release:

Next 48 hours:

  1. Anthony's minutes management. Get Chance's comments and check whether the reported restriction is real.
  2. Adelaide's injuries. Cameron's right ankle, and how many players Gleeson has left after closing the game with a short lineup.
  3. Officiating and betting chat. Monitor quietly. Don't amplify it, since the numbers don't back the main claim.
  4. Cotton's run at a seventh MVP. He opened with 29 against the league's most-hyped recruit.
  5. Melbourne's three-point shooting. They made 7 of 23 in the opener; watch whether it's a pattern.

No post-game press conference or media coverage was available before the cutoff.
